Danish wind turbine maker Vestas has won a contract to provide turbine components for MidAmerican Energy's 2,000MW Wind XI project in Iowa, US.

Wind XI is a $3.6bn project unveiled by Warren Buffet's energy company MidAmerican in April. Approved by Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) in August, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

As per the contract, Vestas will supply 214MW of production tax credit (PTC) qualifying V110-2.0MW turbine components.

"As the only state to generate more than 30% of its energy from wind, Iowa leads the country in delivering economic and environmental benefits to its communities."

Vestas' US and Canada sales and service division president Chris Brown said: “With this order, MidAmerican positions itself to secure the full value of the PTC for the Wind XI project, and takes the next step in delivering low-cost, domestic wind energy to its customers.

“As the only state to generate more than 30% of its energy from wind, Iowa leads the country in delivering wind energy’s economic and environmental benefits to its communities, and it’s an honour to be a part of the largest wind project in the state’s history.”

In June this year, both parties entered into another conditional agreement. For this, Vestas agreed to supply up to 1,000 V110-2.0MW wind turbines for the Wind XI project.
