Swedish power company Vattenfall has decided to invest more than £300m for the development of the 92.4MW, 11 turbine Aberdeen offshore windfarm in Scotland.

Vattenfall has agreed to acquire a 25% share of the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group for an undisclosed sum.

The European power company also intends to own an 100% stake in Aberdeen Offshore WindFarm, which operates the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC).

"We are confident the new UK and Scottish governments will support offshore wind as the industry lowers the cost of energy significantly."

Vattenfall's wind business area senior vice-president and head Gunnar Groebler said: “Vattenfall’s green light for the EOWDC underlines our long-term ambition to grow our wind power capacity, including in the UK.

“The UK Government believes that windpower should continue to provide an essential part of the UK’s low carbon electricity generation mix and so we remain committed to expanding our UK operations.

“In particular, we are confident that the new UK and Scottish governments will continue to support growth in offshore wind as the industry lowers the cost of energy significantly.”
