Sener and Spanish infrastructure company Acciona has commenced turnkey construction of the €500m Kathu Solar Park Complex in South Africa.
The two companies will carry out engineering, construction management, and commissioning of the 100MW plant until it is completed and delivered. Sener will also provide the primary technology for the facility, including the SENERtrough-II parabolic trough.

Located in Kathu in the African country’s Northern Cape Province, the solar plant is expected to begin operations in 2018, having already carried out the required basic engineering. Once completed, the new plant will have the capacity to power 80,000 South African households.
The project is a part of a 2010 Integrated Resource Programme (IRP) National Electricity Plan, which aims to increase the country’s power generation capacity up to 86.8GW in 2030.
The current project uses SENERtrough technology and a molten salt storage system and is the second solar thermal project of the two companies in South Africa. The first is the 50MW Bokpoort plant in Northern Cape.
South Africa receives an average solar radiation of more than 2,500 hours every year.
