Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has awarded 16 contracts as part of large renewable procurement (LRP).

These total 455MW, with contracts having been awarded for five windpower developments with a total capacity of 299.5MW, seven solar projects with combined totalling 139.9MW, and four hydropower facilities with a combined output of 15.5MW.

The Canadian subsidiary of EDP Renewables has secured a contract for one project, the proposed 100MW Nation Rise windfarm.

"This LRP process introduced strong competition among developers of large renewable projects, helping drive down price and secure clean, reliable generation for the province."

From 16 projects, the proposed 100MW Nation Rise windfarm is the largest.

Renewable Energy Systems Canada and EDF EN Canada Development secured contracts for 82MW of combined capacity.

RES Canada secured contracts for two wind parks, one with a 50MW capacity and the other with a 32MW output.

EDF EN secured contracts for a 60MW wind project and two small solar projects.

According to IESO, the approximate weighted price range for wind power project is CAD 0.0645 to CAD 0.1055 per kWh; and from CAD0.1415 to CAD0.1785/kWh for solar.

IESO stated that the LRP process requirements have been set up to secure a balance between early community engagement and achieving value for ratepayers.

ESO president and CEO Bruce Campbell said: "This LRP process introduced strong competition among developers of large renewable projects, helping to drive down price and secure clean, reliable generation for the province."
