The wind farm currently has an installed capacity of around 72MW, SeeNews Renewable reported.

Located 12km north-west of Brora, Sutherland, the wind farm has been generating power since 2012.

The clean electricity generated by the existing 35 turbines at the wind farm is enough to power nearly 60,000 homes.

SSE project manager Michael Walker said: "We are a responsible developer and we look forward to building on the strong relationships we already have with the communities close to Gordonbush in East Sutherland.

In June last year, the company submitted a Section 36 application to the Scottish government for the proposed extension to Gordonbush wind farm.

SSE currently operates hydro power, onshore wind, biomass, offshore wind and marine projects.

The company recently announced the sale of a 10% stake in the Beatrice offshore wind farm to joint venture partner Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP).

SSE will continue to be the lead operator of the 588MW wind farm with a 40% stake, alongside CIP and Repsol who own a 35% and 25% stake in the project respectively.
