Swiss automation firm ABB has implemented a comprehensive Network Manager supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) / energy management system (EMS) solution across the network of US National Grid.

Deployment of the integrated solution is expected to increase reliability of the grid and strengthen its service for 3.4 million energy customers in the east coast of the country.

The new project involves upgrades to the National Grid’s transmission and distribution control centres in upstate New York and Massachusetts, which are likely to standardise the systems with the use of ABB’s up-to-date network management solutions.

The Swiss company was responsible for design, engineering, software, hardware and system implementation of the SCADA / EMS solution, along with its related services.

ABB Power Systems president Claudio Facchin said: "This project is a good example of the scalability of our network management solutions to support the most demanding requirements.

"It also reinforces our Next Level strategic focus to further strengthen our power automation business, as grids and networks get smarter."

US National Grid VP Operations John Spink said about ABB: "Their network management solutions are helping us build a high-performance and high-availability transmission system, improving grid operation and security."

As well as the SCADA system, ABB’s Network Manager platform comprises advanced power system applications, user interface with advanced visualisation and situational awareness, along with a fully integrated operator-training simulator.

System integration capabilities of the solution include the use of Common Information Model (CIM), full system redundancy and scope for expansion. It is also equipped with capabilities that can assist the US utility to meet its cybersecurity requirements (NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection).
