EDF Renewable Energy has acquired the 18,000-acre, 194MW Spinning Spur 3 wind project in Texas from Cielo Wind Power.
Located in Oldham County, approximately 80km west of Amarillo, the project is expected to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The project will sell its output to two municipal utilities, Georgetown Utility Systems and Garland Power & Light, under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs).
The acquisition of the project, which represents EDF Renewable Energy’s sixth Texas-based wind energy farm, is part of the company’s efforts to grow its wind energy production portfolio.
In April 2013, EDF Renewable Energy had commissioned Spinning Spur I and simultaneously announced the launch of Spinning Spur 2 at the same location with each having a 161MW capacity.
Spinning Spur 1 is comprised of 70 Siemens 2.3MW turbines, while Spinning Spur II will feature 87 General Electric (GE) wind turbines with a capacity of 1.85MW each.

By GlobalDataSpinning Spur I will deliver its output to the Southwestern Public Service, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xcel Energy, under a 15-year PPA signed in December 2012, while Spinning Spur II will also sell its output under a ten-year PPA.
All the three projects (or phases) will benefit from Electricity Reliability Council of Texas’ (ERCOT) new transmission lines that will connect power plants in the Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ) to the state’s high electricity demand areas.
EDF Renewable Energy executive vice-president Ryan Pfaff said the company forayed into the Texas market in 2011 through the first Spinning Spur project, and continues to find attractive investment opportunities in the state.
"We are pleased to add Spinning Spur 3 to our growing Texas wind portfolio, which we expect to exceed 1GW of installed capacity by the end of 2015," said Pfaff.
"We further look forward to providing affordable, clean electricity to the citizens and businesses of Georgetown and Garland."
