Tata Power has commissioned its 4,000MW power station in Gujarat, India.

The company has tested its first super critical 800MW unit with initial generation of 60MW and aims to increase the generation once fully operational. The project at Mundra, in the Kutch district of Gujarat, will have five units of 800MW output each.

Once the project is fully operational, Tata UMPP will produce 1,900MW of power and feed electricity to the grid, reports the Economic Times. The power station has been built under India’s UMPP programme, which is administered by Power Finance Corporation (PFC), and has allocated four projects to Tata Power and Reliance Power.

Reliance Power secured bids for three projects under the UMPP programme, which will be located in Sasan in Madhya Pradesh, Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, and Tilaiya in Jharkhand. However, the implementation of projects faces several challenges including a sharp rise in the cost of imported coal.
