A joint venture (JV) between Enel Green Power (EGP) and Dutch Infrastructure Fund (DIF) has commenced construction of the 137.7MW Bungala Solar One photovoltaic (PV) plant near Port Augusta in South Australia.

The plant is the first phase of the Bungala Solar PV project, which will feature a total of 275MW capacity following completion.

The Bungala Solar One facility will span an area of around 300ha of land and will be equipped with around 420,000 polycrystalline PV modules mounted on single-axis tracker structures.

It is expected to supply electricity to Australia’s transmission grid via the Emeroo and Davenport Substations located near Port Augusta.

“The Bungala Solar One facility will span an area of around 300ha of land and will be equipped with around 420,000 polycrystalline PV modules.”

EGP head Antonio Cammisecra said: “This project marks the first step of our growth strategy in a country, which boasts such an abundant resource base and whose renewable capacity is expected to surge in the next years.

“Against this backdrop, Enel Green Power aims to become a key player in Australia’s green energy sector.”

EGP’s parent company Enel expects to invest a sum of $157m in the Bungala Solar PV project, which is estimated to require a total investment of $315m.

Construction of Bungala Solar Two is planned to begin by the end of this year and be fully commissioned by the beginning of 2019. This second phase is fully contracted under a long-term power purchase agreement with Australian utility Origin Energy.

Upon completion, the Bungala Solar facility will be able to generate nearly 570GWh of energy annually, which is equivalent to the energy requirement of around 82,000 Australian households.
