Norwegian Hydrogen has confirmed the investment in a new green hydrogen production facility in Rjukan, Telemark, Norway.

This development aligns with the company’s strategy to expand its green hydrogen production across the Nordic region.

The facility is expected to be completed at the end of 2027 with an electrolysis capacity of 25MW.

The plant is expected to be one of the largest of its kind in the Nordics, with prospects for future expansion.

Norwegian Hydrogen is exploring the possibility of initiating production even before the plant is fully operational.

Norwegian Hydrogen CEO Jens Berge said: “This is an important milestone. The Rjukan facility will be important for both us and our customers, and we’re excited to get started.”

The project benefits from a long-term power purchase agreement with Tinn Energi, an energy supplier.

Norwegian Hydrogen has signed a letter of intent with hydrogen company Nel for a pressurised alkaline electrolysis plant for the project. Nel’s technology development has been supported by the EU Innovation Fund.

The company acquired the hydrogen project from Aker Horizons in January 2025. Aker Horizons retains an option to reinvest in the project in the future.

Norwegian Hydrogen is leveraging Aker Horizons’ groundwork to provide clean hydrogen to various industrial segments.

Rjukan is poised to become a central hub for the green transition, supplying green hydrogen to customers in southern Norway and parts of Sweden, offering competitive terms.

Norwegian Hydrogen has positioned itself as a key player in the green hydrogen sector, with facilities in Norway and Denmark and various projects in development.

In June 2023, Norwegian Hydrogen announced plans for a 270MW green hydrogen production facility at Ørskog in Norway.
