Shanghai Electric has signed two milestone cooperation agreements with Oman’s Mawarid Group and Abu Dhabi Future Energy (Masdar) in Saudi Arabia to support the Middle East region’s energy transformation.

The comprehensive wind power cooperation agreement with Mawarid encompasses wind turbine supply, technology transfer and the design of a localised factory.

This collaboration is designed to tap into Oman’s natural wind resources, establish a local supply chain and foster long-term economic growth within the region.

Oman’s wind power project is expected to accelerate the country’s shift from conventional energy to a diverse clean energy mix, fostering China-Arab technical collaboration.

Shanghai Electric Group chairman Wu Lei said: “The Omani Government’s forward-looking Vision 2040 and Green Hydrogen Strategy align with Shanghai Electric’s strategic development goals. We are eager to use this project as an opportunity to integrate advanced technologies and high-quality products in the new energy sector with Oman’s resource strengths and market potential.”

The agreement signed with Masdar aims to develop the 2GW Sadawi photovoltaic (PV) project and represents Shanghai Electric’s largest solar engineering, procurement and construction project to date.

Covering 40km², the project is set to generate more than six billion kilowatt-hours annually, sufficient to power 700,000 households and reduce carbon emissions by three million tonnes.

This initiative is a pivotal part of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Programme, utilising the country’s ample sunlight with cutting-edge PV technology.

Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said: “Masdar attaches great importance to its partnership with Shanghai Electric and looks forward to further deepening cooperation with them in wind power, photovoltaics, energy storage and other fields in the future to jointly promote the transformation of the global energy structure.”

The Saudi PV project supports the kingdom’s objective to diversify its economy and reduce fossil fuel dependency, paving the way for Shanghai Electric’s expansion in the Middle East solar market.

Earlier this month, Masdar partnered with Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, PT PLN (Persero), to advance the development of floating solar power projects in Indonesia.
