The European Commission (EC) is providing €52m ($58m) for nine renewable energy initiatives in Finland and Estonia.

The projects include both solar and wind energy developments.

The funding support comes through the EU Renewable Energy Financing Mechanism (RENEWFM).

The amount aligns closely with the total available call budget of €52.4m and is intended to boost the EU’s renewable energy capacity while promoting cross-border co-operation among member states.

The funded projects will jointly contribute 445.65MW of new clean energy capacity. Commissioning will take place between 2027 and 2028.

The funding is being provided to seven solar photovoltaic projects in Finland: Laivakangas, Lamminneva, Isoneva, Lakiasuo, JoSoleilTwo, Lålby and Pori Peittoo.

Two onshore wind projects located in Estonia are also among the selected recipients. The Püssi project and Maima wind park will help expand Estonia’s wind energy generation.

RENEWFMT was created by the European Commission in 2020. It is intended to support renewable projects and encourage joint action among member states.

In this funding round, Luxembourg provided the financial contributions for the projects.

Finland and Estonia host the projects by offering suitable locations for installation. This structure supports a collective approach to meeting EU renewable energy targets.

In April 2025, the EC approved a €400m Spanish state aid scheme to support renewable hydrogen production via the European Hydrogen Bank’s auctions-as-a-service mechanism.

Spain aims to develop up to 345MW of electrolysis capacity, with a projected output of 221,000t of renewable hydrogen. The initiative is expected to cut carbon emissions by up to one million tonnes.
