Tilt Renewables has opened the Rye Park wind farm, the largest operating wind farm in New South Wales (NSW), signifying a significant advancement in the region’s renewable energy capabilities.

Located north of Yass, the Rye Park wind farm has been inaugurated by NSW Minister for Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Heritage, Penny Sharpe.

With a capacity of 396MW, the wind farm is equipped with 66 high-capacity turbines, each rated at 6MW.

More than half of the energy produced by Rye Park is supplied to Newmont’s Cadia gold mine under a long-term power purchase agreement.

The remaining 45% is contracted with AGL, an investor in Tilt Renewables, contributing to a cleaner and more reliable energy supply across the grid.

Tilt Renewables CEO Anthony Fowler said: “This project represents a major step forward in Australia’s transition to a clean energy future.

“With 66 turbines now standing tall across these hills, the fully operational Rye Park Wind Farm can generate up to 396 megawatts of renewable energy – enough to power approximately 215,000 homes.

“It’s a big win for New South Wales, and a significant milestone for Tilt Renewables, which is a leading Australian-owned renewable energy business and the largest owner of wind and solar generation in the country.”

The inauguration included a ribbon-cutting ceremony at one of the turbines and a community event at the Rye Park Recreational Ground, highlighting the project’s local engagement.

Tilt Renewables has committed to ongoing community support, having invested A$250,000 ($160,979) in local benefit sharing initiatives during the construction phase.

The initiatives supported by this investment include school mental wellbeing programmes, the Country Education Foundation, and the enhancement of the Rye Park Recreation Ground’s facilities.

These funds, managed in partnership with Hilltops Council, Yass Valley Council, and Upper Lachlan Shire, demonstrate Tilt Renewables’ commitment to not only environmental sustainability but also to the socioeconomic well-being of the regions where it operates.

NSW Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe said: “Projects like Rye Park Wind Farm show the strong progress being made in the energy transformation.

“With three out of four of the state’s remaining coal-fired power stations due to close in the next decade, Rye Park plays a vital role in keeping the lights on.

“The Minns Government welcomes this project that will supply more reliable and affordable energy.”
