
US-based company Third Pillar Solar has partnered Diamond Infrastructure Solutions to explore the potential of utility-scale floating solar projects in the US state of Texas.
Through this collaboration, the first of its kind in North America, Diamond grants exclusive access to Third Pillar Solar to generate renewable energy by leveraging previously untapped water surfaces.
The initiative also aims to address water conservation by mitigating evaporation losses.
The floating solar project is estimated to require an investment of more than $700m and has the potential to generate up to 500MW of renewable energy.
This is particularly relevant for a region experiencing water scarcity, as it could help preserve around 15% of freshwater currently lost to evaporation.
Third Pillar CEO Jaimeet Gulati stated: “This agreement demonstrates the growing appetite for utility-scale energy solutions and highlights how floating solar can enhance and transform the value of existing infrastructure, all while providing cost-competitive energy, preserving agricultural land, reducing evaporation losses and existing out of public view.

The projects are scheduled for construction and completion by 2030 and will create local jobs during construction and operational phases.

Diamond plans to collaborate with Third Pillar Solar on local supply chain initiatives, aiming to leverage their combined expertise for community benefits.
These projects will become the largest floating solar installations in the Americas, illustrating the diverse advantages that floating solar technology can offer in terms of energy generation, land utilisation and water conservation.
