JSW Energy has commissioned its first and India’s largest green hydrogen manufacturing plant, marking a major milestone in the country’s clean energy transition.
Located adjacent to the JSW Steel facility in Vijayanagar, within the Indian state of Karnataka, the plant is part of Tranche I of the Production Linked Incentive scheme.

The newly commissioned plant will supply green hydrogen directly to JSW Steel’s direct reduced iron (DRI) unit, enabling low-carbon steel production.
This initiative is backed by a seven-year offtake agreement with JSW Steel to supply 3,800 tons per annum (tpa) of green hydrogen and 30,000tpa of green oxygen to the steelmaker.
The project forms a part of JSW Energy’s 6,800tpa allocation under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme, run by the Solar Energy Corporation of India.
JSW Energy has also signed a memorandum of understanding with JSW Steel to supply 85,000-90,000tpa of green hydrogen and 720,000tpa of green oxygen by 2030.

JSW Energy joint managing director and CEO Sharad Mahendra said: “We are proud to commission India’s first green hydrogen plant under National Green Hydrogen Mission, implemented through the SIGHT programme, by Government of India.
“The project is a key milestone in our country’s clean energy journey and reflects our unwavering commitment to support India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy and decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel. Green hydrogen will assume a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable and Atmanirbhar Bharat [self-reliant India].”
JSW Energy currently has a total locked-in power generation capacity of 30.5GW.
This comprises 13.3GW that is operational, 12.5GW under construction across thermal and renewable sources, 150MW under acquisition in hydro, and a further 4.6GW in the pipeline.
Looking ahead, JSW Energy aims to reach 30GW of generation capacity and 40GWh of energy storage capacity by financial year 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
