NHOA Energy, in collaboration with EnergyAustralia and Enerven, has launched a battery energy storage system (BESS) project with a capacity of 245 megawatt-hours (MWh) in Hallett, South Australia.

This move follows the financial closure and marks the project’s progression into the delivery phase.

The system, located near Canowie, aims to enhance grid stability within the National Electricity Market (NEM) and constitutes a significant commitment by NHOA Energy to the Australian market.

The project’s launch event took place at the Hallett Power Station, and was attended by representatives from EnergyAustralia, Enerven, NHOA Energy, government officials, traditional owners and local community stakeholders.

Commissioning of the Hallett BESS is scheduled to commence in January 2027, aligning with its development and testing schedule.

The Hallett BESS is owned and developed by EnergyAustralia and is situated alongside the existing gas-fired power station. This development represents the initial phase of a larger site expansion.

EnergyAustralia trading and transition executive Daniel Nugent said: “By building the battery at Hallett, we are making use of infrastructure that is already there, supporting local jobs and strengthening South Australia’s power system at the same time.

“Financial close means this project is real, funded and now being built, and our focus now shifts squarely to disciplined execution and delivery.”

NHOA Energy serves as the delivery partner for the first stage of this project.

This system offers 50MW with five hours of storage at its “beginning of life”.

Designed as a grid-forming solution, it will contribute to frequency control, grid support, energy arbitrage and participation in NEM market services, thereby fortifying South Australia’s power system resilience while supporting renewable energy integration.

NHOA Energy’s proprietary PROPHET control platform ensures safe and coordinated operation between new and existing assets at the site.

The initiative has secured support through the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme, which aims to mitigate investment risks and promote clean energy deployment.

In April 2025, NHOA Energy announced the commissioning of Blyth Battery, a 238.5MW/477MWh energy storage system in South Australia.
