RWE has installed the first turbine at the 1.1GW Thor offshore project in the Danish North Sea, marking a key milestone in its construction.

Situated off the west coast near Jutland, the installation is taking place from the Port of Esbjerg with the use of the Fred.Olsen Windcarrier vessel Brave Tern, which can transport and install three turbine sets per cycle.

The project, said to be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, involves the installation of 72 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines, each capable of producing up to 15MW, with completion anticipated by the end of 2026.

These turbines will stand approximately 148m above sea level and feature rotor blades up to 115m long.

RWE said that Thor is pioneering in terms of sustainability as it will be the first offshore wind farm globally to use 36 steel turbine towers made with reduced carbon emissions by Siemens Gamesa.

Some turbines will also come equipped with recyclable rotor blades, aligning with RWE’s commitment to sustainability throughout the life cycle of the wind farm.

The project laid the necessary foundations and an offshore substation last year, and recently acquired a 30-year electricity production licence from the Danish Energy Agency, enabling commissioning works to proceed according to schedule.

Once operational in 2027, Thor will generate enough renewable energy to power more than one million Danish households.

The operations and maintenance activities are anticipated to create 50–60 jobs at a new RWE service facility, which is set to open at the Port of Thorsminde in March.

RWE offshore wind CEO Sven Utermöhlen said: “Large-scale construction projects at sea require teamwork, precision and a clear commitment to safety – qualities that our teams demonstrate every day at Thor.

“With the first turbine now installed, we have reached an important milestone in the delivery of Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm.

“Once fully commissioned, Thor will play a crucial role in achieving Denmark’s climate goals and in strengthening the EU’s energy independence.”

RWE leads the project’s construction and operations, holding a majority stake of 51%, with Norges Bank Investment Management owning the remaining 49%.

The company maintains a significant presence in offshore wind energy globally, with 19 operational projects worldwide, including Rødsand 2 south of Lolland in Denmark.

In September 2025, RWE completed the installation of all 72 monopile foundations at the Thor offshore wind farm.
