TotalEnergies has made a final investment decision (FID) and secured financing for the 1GW Mirny project, an onshore wind farm with a 600MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in south-east Kazakhstan.

The development aims to generate 100TW-hours (TWh) of renewable electricity over a period of 25 years, providing power to approximately one million residents.

Electricity generated will be sold to Kazakhstan’s Government through a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) established in 2023.

The project requires an investment of $1.2bn (€1.02bn), with approximately 75% of the funding sourced from external finances.

Mirny involves constructing a 1GW onshore wind farm with 150 turbines, paired with a 600MWh BESS provided by TotalEnergies’ affiliate Saft, to ensure reliable power to the national grid.

The storage facility is expected to improve grid stability, marking a notable enhancement to Kazakhstan’s energy infrastructure.

TotalEnergies owns 60% of the project, with Samruk Energy and KazMunayGas each holding a 20% share.

TotalEnergies and its partners have signed a common terms agreement with an international lending consortium to secure a financing framework for the Mirny project.

The consortium includes DBK, DEG, China Construction Bank, EBRD, Proparco, QNB Group, Société Générale and Standard Chartered.

TotalEnergies renewables SVP Olivier Jouny said: “We are delighted to launch one of Kazakhstan’s largest renewable energy initiatives to date, thereby contributing to the country’s target of increasing the share of renewables in electricity generation to 15% by 2030.

“We look forward to advancing construction of the Mirny project alongside our partners and in cooperation with the Kazakhstani authorities.

“This 1GW onshore wind farm will also contribute to the 9GW renewables portfolio that we are combining with Masdar through a 50/50 joint venture across nine Asian countries, including Kazakhstan.”

TotalEnergies has operated in Kazakhstan since 1993, focusing on a multi-energy strategy that blends hydrocarbon production with renewable energy projects.

In February this year, the company signed two long-term PPAs with Google to supply 1GW of solar energy in Texas, US, over a 15-year term.
