Renewable energy developer Elements Green has acquired the Newarthill Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project from Geocore, expanding its portfolio of energy storage assets in the UK.
The site, situated near Motherwell, Scotland, has a planned capacity of 300MW with an initial two-hour duration, and the potential for up to four hours’ storage.

Planning approval for the development was granted on 4 February 2025.
The project will connect to the electricity network via a nearby 275kV substation, with grid access secured through a recent offer from the National Electricity System Operator as part of ongoing network reforms.
The company targets energisation of the facility by October 2029.
Connected to the transmission system, the Newarthill BESS is located in a constrained section of the UK grid, enabling it to assist with renewable energy integration and provide additional flexibility.
As electricity production from renewables increases, projects such as Newarthill are expected to contribute to frequency regulation, improve system reliability and help reduce pressure on the network.
These energy storage assets absorb surplus power produced during low-demand periods and release electricity when required, thereby addressing issues associated with network congestion and minimising curtailment and redispatch costs often seen in Scotland.
According to Elements Green, full ownership of the project supports the company’s strategy to build out large-scale battery infrastructure in key parts of the UK network.
The Newarthill asset is positioned around the B6 and B4 grid boundaries.
Elements Green CEO Rasmus Friis said: “Newarthill is a high-quality project located at a strategically important grid node within Scotland, where significant renewable generation coincides with growing system constraints and strong demand for network flexibility.”
Organisations acting as advisors during this transaction included Bird & Bird and Brodies on legal matters for Elements Green, while Savills Earth Capital Advisors provided financial guidance to Geocore.
In September 2025, EDF signed a long-term agreement with Elements Green to support the development of the 360MW/720MW-hour Staythorpe BESS in Nottinghamshire, England.
