Varco Energy has selected NHOA Energy, working in consortium with IQA-Elecnor, to deliver a 100MW/244MW-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Old Allen Road site in West Yorkshire, UK.

The company is backed by the Adaptogen Capital Battery Storage Fund.

The contracts, confirming the delivery of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the project, also involve GE Vernova, which will provide the 275kV high-voltage transformer.

The BESS is scheduled to begin operations in 2027.

Once complete, the project will support the UK electricity grid with frequency and voltage regulation, reserve capacity and load shifting services, which are considered important for integrating renewable energy sources and maintaining grid balance.

The Old Allen Road project will increase Varco Energy’s operational and in-construction battery storage portfolio to 350MW by 2027, with an additional 275MW in development.

The new facility forms part of Varco’s wider strategy to support the UK Government’s goal of deploying between 23GW and 30GW of energy storage by 2030.

NHOA Energy has been tasked with supplying the BESS, while IQA-Elecnor will provide the balance of plant and oversee interconnection works at 33/275kV.

NHOA Energy EMEA vice-president Fabrizio Ciaccia said: “After the successful commissioning of the 477MWh Blyth BESS in Australia, NHOA Energy and Elecnor are joining forces once again to bring proven expertise in energy storage, EPC delivery and transmission infrastructure to support Varco Energy in delivering one of the most ambitious battery storage projects in the UK.

“Old Allen Road is a strategic asset that will strengthen grid resilience and support the UK’s energy transition.”

The project will be delivered under an EPC consortium structure, with both companies citing experience in energy storage, EPC projects and transmission infrastructure.

The development is IQA-Elecnor’s first battery energy storage project in the region following recent work on grid stability projects in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

According to Varco Energy, the addition of assets like Old Allen Road is in line with increased demand for balancing solutions as the country’s energy mix transitions towards renewables.

Varco Energy Old Allen Road BESS director Richard Whitmore said: “The delivery of the Old Allen Road BESS project is the next step for Varco as it brings onstream 350MW of BESS assets by 2027.

“Old Allen Road has brought together global leaders NHOA Energy, Elecnor and GE Vernova to deliver the project under a consortium EPC agreement.”
