NHOA Energy has received a notice to proceed from Neoen for the Culcairn Battery project, a 215MW/963MW-hour (MWh) energy storage facility to be installed in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

The project will be delivered through an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract in partnership with a joint venture (JV) comprising Equans Solar & Storage and Bouygues Construction Australia.

The Culcairn Battery project will be integrated “behind the meter” at Neoen’s existing 440MW-peak (MWp) Culcairn Solar Farm, forming a hybrid plant that includes a battery energy storage system (BESS).

The hybrid configuration is designed to enable the integration of renewable energy and improve stability across Australia’s National Electricity Market.

NHOA Energy Australia & Pacific vice-president Adrian Marziano said: “Culcairn Battery reflects the trust that Neoen continues to place in our company following years of successful collaboration and project delivery.

“Repeat projects from a leading renewable energy developer is the strongest endorsement of our execution capabilities and our ability to deliver high-quality energy infrastructure at scale.

“We are particularly proud to support Neoen in delivering this hybrid storage asset in Australia and in unlocking greater value from one of the state’s renewable energy resources through this landmark solar-plus-storage project.”

NHOA Energy’s appointment follows its earlier delivery of Neoen’s Blyth Battery, a 238.5MW/477MWh facility in South Australia that has been operational since early 2025.

NHOA Energy’s scope of work reflects its expertise in hybrid systems that integrate energy storage, renewable energy sources and conventional generation assets.

The company states that multi-technology control and hybrid plant implementation are core areas of competence developed through various projects globally.

The project represents the next phase of collaboration between Neoen and NHOA Energy in large-scale battery infrastructure in Australia.

Neoen Australia-Pacific CEO Jean-Christophe Cheylus said: “We are excited to launch construction of Neoen’s first behind-the-meter battery at a solar farm in Australia.

“This is our second major project with NHOA Energy, and we look forward to delivering more storage capacity to support grid-stability in New South Wales.

“This achievement comes only a few weeks after Neoen inaugurated the Culcairn Solar Farm and showcases the pace at which our team consistently develops and delivers high-quality assets to accelerate the energy transition.”

In March this year, NHOA Energy secured two BESS projects in Italy with a combined stored capacity of approximately 600MWh and a power output of 90MW.
