The biggest barrier is commercial viability rather than basic technical feasibility. Airborne systems must compete with mature renewables whose costs have fallen dramatically, so investors scrutinise energy costs, maintenance burdens, reliability and operational constraints. For buoyant systems, helium price volatility, large platform manufacturing costs, and the practical need for periodic landing for maintenance and extreme weather all weigh heavily on economics.
