The top five companies accounted for 35% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Contemporary Amperex Technology filed the most energy storage patents within the power industry in Q2 2024. The company filed 178 energy storage-related patents in the quarter, compared with 255 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Samsung SDI with 68 energy storage patent filings, Ningde Times New Energy Technology (24 filings), and State Grid Corporation of China (21 filings) in Q2 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 44% share of total patent filings
The largest share of energy storage related patent filings in the power industry in Q2 2024 was in China with 44%, followed by the US (18%) and Japan (5%). The share represented by China was 5% higher than the 40% share it accounted for in Q1 2024.
