A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11912720B2) discloses a rigid macrocycle consisting of three diimide subunits, including a poly(peri-naphthalene) diimide (PPNDI) subunit and two naphthalene diimide (NDI) or pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) subunits, connected by three chiral linking subunits. The macrocycle exhibits C2 symmetry, forming a triangular structure. Additionally, a crystalline composition comprising multiple rigid macrocycles arranged in dimers through p-p stacking of PPNDI subunits is claimed in the patent.

Furthermore, the patent covers a photoluminescent material incorporating the rigid macrocycle, with a quantum yield greater than 0.5. The material can be excited by electromagnetic radiation in the range of 200 nm to 700 nm, emitting radiation between 350 nm to 800 nm, with a peak wavelength between 500 nm to 715 nm. Methods for preparing the rigid macrocycle and stimulating light emission from the photoluminescent material are also detailed in the patent, involving exciting the macrocycle with near-ultraviolet or visible range radiation. The methods emphasize the arrangement of the rigid macrocycles in dimers through p-p stacking of PPNDI subunits, contributing to the material's photoluminescent properties.
