“Optimal drainage of a reservoir, both physically and economically, is not as straightforward as it used to be. Different well paths are available for different geological structures: conventional vertical, vertical, slanted and horizontal wells. Also corkscrew, fish hook wells or snake wells are on offering if the geology demands. Next to that various types of multi-lateral, multiple horizontal wells, complete the picture. Drillers can do anything, but will those wells flow? Often hydraulic fracturing is required, especially in low permeability reservoirs. The question is: How do we clean, stimulate or otherwise optimize the inflow into these fancy completions?
In the drive towards more technically challenging completions and the development of unconventional reservoirs, such as shale gas, heavy oil or coal bed methane not enough attention is paid to the details of inflow performance optimization. This can result in poor or less than optimum production. Asset managers, advisors and engineers involved in the planning, execution, and evaluation of well completions need to have the background in what is possible using modern well stimulation techniques and tools.
