Cambambe is a 960MW hydro power project. It is located on Kwanza river/basin in Cuanza Norte, Angola. The project is currently active. It has been developed in multiple phases. The project construction commenced in 1958 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1962.

Cambambe is a run-of-river project. Cambambe (Cambambe Central 1) underwent through rehabilitation & modernization during 2008-2012.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1958 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1962.

Contractors Involved

Novonor was selected to render EPC services for the hydro power project.

Cambambe (Cambambe Central 1) is equipped with Andritz Hydro francis turbines. The phase consists of 4 turbines with 68.1MW nameplate capacity.

Cambambe (Cambambe Central 2) is equipped with Voith Hydro Holding francis turbines. The phase consists of 4 turbines with 175MW nameplate capacity.

GE Renewable Energy supplied 4 electric generators for the Cambambe (Cambambe Central 1). The generator capacity is 72 MVA.

Voith Hydro Holding supplied 4 electric generators for the Cambambe (Cambambe Central 2).

About Empresa Nacional de Electricidade – E.P

Empresa Nacional de Electricidade – E.P. (ENE) is a state-owned energy company. It carries out electricity generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in the country. It generates electricity from diversified fuel sources, including hydroelectric, coal-fired and combined cycle power plants. It also procures electricity from neighboring African countries. The company has total installed capacity of 1,793 MW and 1,480 MW of available capacity. It generates majority of electricity from hydroelectric plants (almost 60%) and the remaining from thermal plants. The company’s major clientele includes EDEL, EPAL, Cimangola, Kikuxi, refineries and steel companies. It operates in 15 of the 18 provinces in Angola. It participates in energy trading in the South African Power Pool (SAPP). ENE is headquartered in Luanda, Angola.

The company focuses on energy-centric growth. It intends to restructure and rehabilitate organizational framework; expand its infrastructure to improve power generation efficiency, and enhance its sales and marketing services. To this end, its affiliate Gabinete de Aproveitamento do Medio Kwanza entered into an agreement with International technology Group – ANDRITZ to supply electromechanical equipment for the new Lauca hydropower plant, Angola.
