Comanche Peak 2 is a 1,250MW nuclear reactor which is located within the premises of Comanche Peak Steam Electric Station. It is located in Texas, the US. The nuclear reactor is currently generating power and is in active status. The construction on the reactor commenced in Dec, 1974. The first power from the reactor was achieved in Apr, 1993. Subsequent to trial runs the reactor finally entered into commercial operation in Aug, 1993.

Comanche Peak 2 is a Generation II nuclear reactor developed by Westinghouse Electric, the main contractor for the project.

The 1,250MW reactor is owned and operated by Luminant Generation. The company has a stake of 100%.

The PWR reactor generates 9,863.18GWh/annum of electricity. It features 193 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released. Safety contol rods that are used to control the fission rate in the reactor are 53 in number.

Development Status

The reactor construction commenced in Dec, 1974 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Aug, 1993.

Contractors Involved

The steam turbines for the reactor have been supplied by Allis Chalmers(A-C) and Public Service of Indiana (PSI). Gibbs & hill was selected as an architect engineer for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by GE Power. The reactor vessel has been supplied by Combustion Engineering. The material used for the construction of the vessel is Alloyed Steel (SA 533 B/SA 508). The civil works were carried out by Brown & Root.
