Ghazi Barotha, Pakistan

The project was developed by Dongfang Electric and Sinohydro. The project is currently owned by Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority.

Ghazi Barotha is a run-of-river project. The hydro reservoir capacity is 25.5 million cubic meter. The net head of the project is 69m. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 5 in number. The penstock length is 222m. The penstock diameter is 10.6m. The project generated 6,600 GWh of electricity. The project cost is $3,172.74m.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1995 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2003.

Contractors Involved

Voith Hydro Holding was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 5 units of francis turbines, each with 290MW nameplate capacity.

Toshiba Hydro Power (Hanzhou) supplied 5 electric generators for the project.
