Gilgel Gibe III, Ethiopia

Gilgel Gibe III is a 1,870MW hydro power project. It is located on Omo river/basin in Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region, Ethiopia. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. The project construction commenced in 2006 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2015.

The project is developed and owned by Ethiopian Electric Power.

The hydro reservoir capacity is 14,700 million cubic meter. The net head of the project is 211m. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 2 in number. The penstock diameter is 7.5m. The project generated 6,500 GWh of electricity. The project cost is $1,800m.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 2006 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2015.

Contractors Involved

Webuild was selected to render EPC services for the hydro power project.

Dongfang Electric was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 10 units of francis turbines, each with 187MW nameplate capacity.

Dongfang Electric supplied electric generator(s) for the project. The generator capacity is 220 MVA.
