Grand Gulf 1 is a 1,500MW nuclear reactor which is located within the premises of Grand Gulf Nuclear Station. It is located in Mississippi, the US. The nuclear reactor is currently generating power and is in active status. The construction on the reactor commenced in May, 1974. The first power from the reactor was achieved in Oct, 1984. Subsequent to trial runs the reactor finally entered into commercial operation in Jul, 1985.

Description

Grand Gulf 1 is a Generation II nuclear reactor developed by GE Power, the main contractor for the project.

The 1,500MW reactor is operated by Entergy Nuclear. System Energy Resources and Cooperative Energy are currently owning the project having ownership stake of 90% and 10% respectively.

The BWR reactor generates 11,032.51GWh/annum of electricity. It features 800 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released. The project cost is $3,500m.

The reactor construction commenced in May, 1974 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Jul, 1985.

Contractors Involved

Framatome was selected as the steam turbine supplier for the nuclear reactor. The company provided 1 steam turbine for the project. Bechtel was selected as an architect engineer for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by GE Power. The reactor vessel has been supplied by McDermott International. The material used for the construction of the vessel is Alloyed Steel (CST-SS-Clad). The civil works were carried out by Bechtel.
