Itaipu- Brazil is a 7,000MW hydro power project. It is located on Parana river/basin in Parana, Brazil. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. The project construction commenced in 1975 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1984.

Description

The project is currently owned by Itaipu Binacional with a stake of 100%.

Itaipu- Brazil is a run-of-river project. The hydro reservoir capacity is 29,000 million cubic meter. The gross head and net head of the project are 120m and 118.4m respectively. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 20 in number. The penstock length is 142.2m. The penstock diameter is 10.5m. The project cost is $19,600m.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1975 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1984.

Contractors Involved

GE Renewable Energy was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 10 units of francis turbines, each with 700MW nameplate capacity.

GE Renewable Energy supplied 10 electric generators for the project. The generator capacity is 737 MVA.
