Kalayaan is a pumped storage project. The net head of the project is 286.5m. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 6 in number. The penstock length is 1,300m. The penstock diameter is 6m. Kalayaan (Kalayaan Phase I) underwent through rehabilitation & modernization during 2003.
Kalayaan (Kalayaan Phase II) consists of 1 unit of francis turbine with 185MW nameplate capacity.
The project got commissioned in 1983.
Kalayaan (Kalayaan Phase I) is equipped with Franco Tosi Meccanica francis turbines. The phase consists of 2 turbines with 183MW nameplate capacity.
Kalayaan (Kalayaan Phase II) is equipped with Andritz Hydro francis turbine. The phase consists of 1 turbine with 185MW nameplate capacity.
Ercole Marelli Power supplied 2 electric generators for the Kalayaan (Kalayaan Phase I). The generator capacity is 167 MVA.
