Karun 3 is a 2,000MW hydro power project. It is located on Karun river/basin in Khuzestan, Iran. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. The project construction commenced in 1995 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2004.

Description

The project is developed and owned by Iran Water and Power Resources Development.

The hydro reservoir capacity is 3,000 million cubic meter. The net head of the project is 161m. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 8 in number. The penstock length is 64.75m. The penstock diameter is 5.32m. The project generated 4,172 GWh of electricity. The project cost is $1,700m.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1995 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2004.

Contractors Involved

Farab was selected to render EPC services for the hydro power project.

Harbin Turbine was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 8 units of francis turbines, each with 250MW nameplate capacity.

Andritz Hydro supplied electric generator(s) for the project. The generator capacity is 263 MVA.
