The project is being developed by Electricity Generation Co Malawi. Electricity Generation Co Malawi, Electricite de France, International Finance, Scatec and Others are currently owning the project having ownership stake of 30%, 27.5%, 15%, 14% and 13.5% respectively.

Mpatamanga is a run-of-river project. The project is expected to generate 952 GWh of electricity.

The hydro power project consists of 6 units of francis turbines.
