Mphanda Nkuwa I is a 1,500MW hydro power project. It is planned on Zambezi river/basin in Tete, Mozambique. The project is currently in permitting stage. It will be developed in single phase. The project construction is likely to commence in 2024 and is expected to enter into commercial operation in 2030.

Description
The project is being developed by Mpanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric. Camargo Correa Real Estate Development, Insitec Holding and Eletricidade de Mozambique are currently owning the project having ownership stake of 40%, 40% and 20% respectively.
Mphanda Nkuwa I is a run-of-river project. The gross head of the project will be 66.5m. The project is expected to generate 8,600 GWh of electricity. The project cost is expected to be around $2,300m.
The hydro power project consists of 4 turbines, each with 375MW nameplate capacity.
The nameplate capacity of electric generator(s) to be installed at the project site is 390 MVA.
Development Status
The project construction is expected to commence from 2024. Subsequent to that it will enter into commercial operation by 2030.
Power Purchase Agreement
The power generated from the project will be sold to Eskom Holdings SOC under a power purchase agreement.
Contractors Involved
Eletricidade de Mozambique is expected to perform operations and maintenance for the hydro power project.
