Swiss power and automation technology group ABB has secured an order worth approximately $110m from Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) to construct substations in Saudi Arabia.
As per the order, ABB will design, supply, install and commission a 380/110kV bulk supply point substation.

Scope of the order also includes the expansion of the existing remote-end substations in Bisha and Sised to support the 380kV grid interconnection.
Further, ABB will supply other key products comprising control and protection equipment, auxiliary systems and substation automation equipment compliant with the international IEC61850 standard.
These products are claimed to be helpful in monitoring and controlling the substations from a remote control center.
The new substations will be equipped with gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and hybrid technologies to reduce environmental impact.

By GlobalDataOnce completed, the substations are expected to enhance electricity transmission capacity in the country’s western region.
The substations will be developed to connect the Taif East Governorate, a part of the Mecca region, with the national 380kV transmission grid.
The substations will allow the 110kV electricity transmission serving the settlements of Turbah, Al-Khurmah and Rania, while reducing the use of diesel electricity in isolated areas.
ABB power systems division head Claudio Facchin said the latest order would enable the company to continue support the development of Saudi Arabia’s power infrastructure.
"These substations will strengthen the grid and enhance transmission capacity, bringing much-needed electricity to the region to meet growing domestic and industrial demand," Facchin said.
