Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won a INR32.1bn (approximately $52m) contract from Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) for the Shahpurkandi hydro electric project in India.
As per the contract, BHEL will design, manufacture, supply, install and commission hydro generating sets and associated electro mechanical works for the proposed 206MW hydro power project

BHEL will supply hydro generating sets for the project from its manufacturing unit in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh; transformers will be supplied from its Jhansi unit in Uttar Pradesh, and the control and monitoring system from its Bangalore unit in Karnataka, India.
BHEL’s Power Sector – Northern Region will carry out erection and commissioning of the equipment.
The Shahpurkandi hydro electric project is located in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab, in the plains near the Punjab and J&K border. The project is to be executed on River Ravi, 11km downstream of Ranjit Sagar dam and 7.8km upstream of Madhopur Head works.
The project, which will use water released by the Ranjit Sagar dam for power generation, will have two power houses with a total of seven hydro generating sets. Power House-I will have three units of 33MW each, while Power House-II will have two 33MW units and one 8MW unit.

By GlobalDataExpected to be commissioned between 2016 and 2017, the project will provide total annual energy contribution of 1,043 million units.
The project received clearances from the Central Electrical Authority, the Ministry of Environment & Forest, and the Planning Commission.
Currently, BHEL is also carrying out electro-mechanical works for PSPCL’s two 9MW Mukerian hydro electric project, wherein bulb turbine generating sets are being supplied. BHEL has a present share of 90% in the hydro generating capacity of 1,145MW of PSPCL.
