Wind Turbine

Hydro Tasmania has officially opened the 168MW Musselroe wind farm, which is claimed to be the biggest wind farm in Tasmania, Australia.

The $394m project, featuring 56 Vestas wind turbines, will generate enough electricity to power up to 50,000 homes and curb 450,000t of CO2 emissions annually.

The project, which is operated by Woolnorth Wind Farm Holdings, a joint venture between Shenhua Clean Energy and Hydro Tasmania, has been generating electricity into the Tasmanian grid since April 2013.

In February 2013, Hydro Tasmania and Shenhua Clean Energy extended their partnership involving the joint ownership, management and operation of the two Woolnorth wind farms by including the Musselroe wind farm.

The transaction involved a project financing facility of $291m including a $140m, 18-year tranche from Danish Eksport Kredit Fonden (EKF) and another $140m, five-year tranche from NAB, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and Credit Industriel et Commercial.

In December 2011, Vestas was awarded a contract to provide V90-3.0MW wind turbines for the project, a VestasOnline Business SCADA solution and a ten-year service agreement.

Haywards has constructed the turbine towers, while Hazell Bros was responsible for the civil engineering works for the Tasmanian wind power project.

Hydro Tasmania chairman David Crean said the company’s involvement in wind has shown it to add considerable value through expanding Hydro Tasmania’s generation portfolio.

"It also complements perfectly our hydro capability, providing the renewable energy certificates to meet our retail obligations and generating profit and value for our shareholders, the people of Tasmania," said Crean.
