The Indian Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy intends to develop 5,000MW of solar power facilities in the state of Odisha within the next three years.

Business Standard quotes Ministry of New and Renewable Energy advisor Praveen Saxena as saying: "Our focus is now on those states, which have not done very well in solar projects. We will be planning for 5,000MW solar power generation in Odisha in next three years."

A business meet will be organised by the Government of India in February in order to invite around $100bn of investments for the power generation sector, Saxena informed.

"Our focus is now on those states, which have not done very well in solar projects."

The country currently has a combined installed capacity of 2,780MW solar energy, which is expected to scale-up to 100,000MW in next five years under the initiatives of the newly elected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Other Indian states such as Gujarat and Rajasthan have increased their solar power capacity through new projects, reports Business Standard.

Besides solar, Odisha is also expected to generate 700 to 750MW of renewable power through small hydro projects.
