South Africa has strong potential for windpower installation, according to a report by GlobalData.

Titled “Wind Power Market, Update 2016 – Global Market Size, Average Price, Turbine Market Share and Key Country Analysis to 2025”, the report forecasts capacity addition in South Africa over the next four years, with more than 3GW to be added by 2020 bringing the cumulative capacity to 5.6GW.

South Africa is relatively new to the wind industry with just 10MW of cumulative installed capacity in 2012. However, the sector saw growth in the following years, with 30MW installed in 2013, 606MW in 2014, and 483MW in 2015.

To access South Africa's large windpower potential, a reliable system to ascertain wind speeds and potential of various regions across the country is required, says GlobalData’s Analyst Pavan Vyakaranam. Such a system will help plan various aspects of installations, including turbine size, tariff rates, and transmission infrastructure, adds Pavan.

Capitalising on this potential will also enable the country to reach its climate targets. It submitted the Intended Nationally Determined Commitments (INDC) ahead of the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) in 2015 stating its intention to strike a balance between power capacity development and greenhouse gas emission reduction.

Greenhouse gas emissions from South Africa's energy sector currently reach 250 million ton (Mt) of carbon dioxide equivalent. New installations are expected to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 6.4Mt by 2020 and 12.7Mt by 2025, the report adds.
