Russia is to expand its nuclear power production plans for India and set up around 20-24 nuclear energy units in the country to meet the growing energy demands.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India on Thursday for the 15th India-Russia summit is expected to further the nuclear co-operation between the two countries, reports Press Trust of India (PTI).

Initially, Russia had agreed to build 14-16 nuclear plants for India.

Russian Ambassador Alexander Kadakin has been reported by PTI as saying that both India and Russia will negotiate for construction of unit five and six at the Kudankulam nuclear power complex. The countries also intend to sign a technical pact for unit 3 and 4 during the president’s visit.

"Russia had agreed to help India build 14-16 nuclear units. Now it seems that the demand of India is much bigger and this may rise to 20-24 units."

A trial run for unit 2 of the Kudankulam power plant is likely to start in March, and technical glitches in unit one are being resolved, said Kadakin.

Kudankulam nuclear power plant is situated in the state of Tamil Nadu in India.

Atomstroyexport, a unit of Russian nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, is in charge of construction of the plant, according to a 1988 agreement.

The first unit of the plant was launched in July 2013, with the second being in its final stages of development, according to Russian news agency TASS.
