Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Development have signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for the 100MW Belle River Wind project with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) of Canada.

Under the contract, the two companies will jointly develop, own and operate the project, which is based in Lakeshore, Ontario.

Pattern Development CEO Mike Garland said: "This is our fifth project in Ontario, which will result in a combined 970MW of wind energy that will be able to power up to 350,000 homes in the province each year.

Once operational, the 100MW project is expected to generate enough electricity for more than 35,000 Ontario households.

Compared to power generation with coal, the Belle River Wind project is likely to conserve freshwater for 9,000 people in the Canadian province and can help avoid more than 300,000t of CO2 emissions in a year.
