Japanese trading company Toyota Tsusho Corporation, in partnership with South Korean firm Hyundai Engineering, has secured a $383m geothermal order from Kenya Electricity Generating.

Under the terms of the agreement, the firms will work to triple the geothermal capacity in Nairobi, Kenya to 395MW by April 2014 from the existing 115MW.

The Japanese and Korean firms will build a new 140MW plant and expand capacity of another plant from 45MW to 185MW using steam turbine generators.

Currently, Kenya has a power generating capacity of 1,100MW with 44% secured from hydro, reports Reuters.
