Power industry tenders in September 2020: Asia-Pacific leads global activity

On comparing tenders activity in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 396 tenders and a share of 45.8% during September 2020, followed by North America with 249 tenders and a 28.8% share and Europe with 116 tenders and a 13.4% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 73 tenders and an 8.4% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 31 tenders and a 3.6% share.

On the basis of the last 12-month average, Asia-Pacific held a lead over others with 501 tenders, followed by North America with 175.

Thermal tops by technology in September 2020

Looking at tenders by the type of technology, thermal accounted for the largest proportion with 165 tenders and a 46.1% share, followed by solar with 144 tenders and a 40.2% share and wind with 19 tenders and a 5.3% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Equipment was the most popular segment during September 2020, with 356 tenders, followed by Generation Equipment (175) and T&D Project (166).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 444 tenders and a 51.3% share
  2. Project Implementation: 215 tenders and a 24.9% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 149 tenders and a 17.2% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 46 tenders and a 5.3% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: eight tenders and a 0.9% share
  6. Electricity Supply: three tenders and a 0.3% share.

Power tenders in September 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Bundesnetzagentur (Germany): 18,800MW from one tender
  2. National Energy Regulator of South Africa (South Africa): 12,000MW from one tender
  3. The World Bank Group (United States) and Energinet Eltransmission (Denmark): 1,000MW capacity from one tender.
