Salal, India

Salal is a 720MW hydro power project. It is located on Chenab river/basin in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. The project construction commenced in 1970 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1987.

Description

The project is developed and owned by NHPC. The company has a stake of 100%.

Salal is a run-of-river project. The hydro reservoir capacity is 285 million cubic meter. The net head of the project is 94.5m. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 6 in number. The penstock length is 265m. The penstock diameter is 5.23m. The project generated 3,082 GWh of electricity. The project cost is $198.93m.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1970 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1987.

Power Purchase Agreement

Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam, Tata Power Delhi Distribution and Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam are the power offtakers from the project.

Contractors Involved

Bharat Heavy Electricals was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 6 units of francis turbines, each with 115MW nameplate capacity.

Bharat Heavy Electricals supplied 6 electric generators for the project. The generator capacity is 127.8 MVA.
