Sohar I IWPP, Oman

Sohar I IWPP is a 586MW gas fired power project. It is located in Al Batinah North, Oman. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. Post completion of construction, the project got commissioned in May 2007.

The project was developed by Sohar Power Company SAOG. The project is currently owned by Engie with a stake of 35%, MENA Sohar 1 SPV with a stake of 20%, Sogex Oman with a stake of 10% and Ministry of Defence Pension Fund.

It is a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant. The power plant run on dual-fuel. The primary fuel being used to power the plant is natural gas. In case of shortage of natural gas the plant can also run on Fuel Oil. The fuel is procured from Ministry of Oil & Gas.

Development Status

The project got commissioned in May 2007.

Power Purchase Agreement

The power generated from the project is sold to Oman Power and Water Procurement under a power purchase agreement for a period of 15 years, starting from 2007.

Contractors Involved

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Sohar Global Contracting and Construction were selected to render EPC services for the gas fired power project.

The Gas fired project have been supplied by GE Power and Siemens.

Siemens supplied electric generator for the project.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction supplied steam boiler for the project.

Suez-Tractebel Operation and Maintenance Oman is the O&M contractor for thermal power project for a period of 15 years.

Sohar Power Company SAOG (SPC) is a power and water utility that generates electricity and desalinates sea water. It produces electricity from natural gas and fuel oil using gas turbine technology and desalinates sea water using multi-stage flash desalination technology. SPC owns and operates Sohar I power and desalination plant in Sohar Port and Freezone industrial area. The company sells electricity and water to Oman Power and Water Procurement Company SAOC under power purchase agreement and water connection agreements. SPC is headquartered in Sohar, Sultanate of Oman.
