Three Gorges, China

Three Gorges is a 22,500MW hydro power project. It is located on Yangtze river/basin in Hubei, China. The project is currently active. It has been developed in multiple phases. The project construction commenced in 1994 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2003.

Description

The project was developed by China Gezhouba Group and is currently owned by China Three Gorges with a stake of 100%.

Three Gorges is a reservoir based project. The hydro reservoir capacity is 39,300 million cubic meter. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 26 in number. The penstock diameter is 12.4m. The project generated 206,060 GWh of electricity. The project cost is $59,000m.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1994 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2003.
