Tis Abay II, Ethiopia

Tis Abay II is a 73MW hydro power project. It is located on Abay river/basin in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. The project construction commenced in 1998 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2001.

The project is currently owned by Ethiopian Electric Power.

The hydro reservoir capacity is 9,100 million cubic meter. The gross head and net head of the project are 53m and 52.3m respectively. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 2 in number. The penstock length is 115m. The penstock diameter is 4.6m. The project generated 359 GWh of electricity.

The nameplate capacity of electric generator(s) installed at the site is 40 MVA.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1998 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2001.

Contractors Involved

Andritz Hydro was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 2 units of francis turbines, each with 36MW nameplate capacity.
