The project was developed by HydroChina International Engineering and is currently owned by State Grid Corporation of China.
Xianju is a pumped storage project. The gross head of the project is 428m. The project generated 32,630 GWh of electricity. The project cost is $1,469.28m.

Harbin Electric was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 4 units of francis turbines, each with 375MW nameplate capacity.
