Swiss technology company ABB has been selected to supply equipment for the Zhangbei high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) grid in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region of China.

Designed by State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), the Voltage Sourced Converter (VSC) HVDC grid is claimed to be the first of its kind in the world.

The VSC HVDC system features four interconnected stations in a ring network and can transmit up to 4,500MW of clean energy.

The grid will also enable the integration of remote wind, solar and hydro energy in a transmission ring to ensure optimal power flow.

ABB will supply several critical components, including an HVDC Light valve, transformer components, high-voltage capacitors and power semiconductor devices.

ABB Power Grids division president Claudio Facchin said: “ABB pioneered commercial HVDC technology more than 60 years ago and introduced crucial innovations like HVDC Light and ultra-high HVDC (UHVDC) transmission to ensure reliable and efficient power supplies.

ABB noted that the wind energy delivered through the network-based architecture will support demand during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

In a separate development, SGCC subsidiary Jiangsu Electric Power Company has selected ABB’s Ability Ellipse asset performance management (APM) solution to manage and optimise assets across its electrical grid operations.
